Kansas DOT’s Safe Routes to School team has been busy making site visits and hosting pop-up events in Alta Vista to gather input for our new Safe Routes to School Plan. The Plan will include recommendations that center youth safety.

Why focus on youth? Because kids have unique abilities and vulnerabilities when it comes to transportation. Over the next several weeks, we'll be sharing four design principles that make streets safer for young people:

1. Provide dedicated space for walking, biking, and rolling

2. Simplify crossings

3. Increase visibility

4. Design for safe vehicle speeds
