National School Bus Safety Week - Oct 20-24
Posted Date: 10/21/25 (09:00 AM)
Stop on Red, Kids Ahead is a campaign launched by the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE) to bring awareness to the Kansas school bus stop arm law.
National School Bus Safety Week is October 20-24.
It is crucial for drivers to be attentive when school buses are nearby and to follow the law, which requires all motorists to stop when approaching a stopped school bus that is displaying flashing red lights and a stop arm. Drivers must remain stopped until the bus has turned off its flashing red lights and retracted the stop arm. Violating this law not only endangers children but is also punishable by a fine and court costs exceeding $420.
When a school bus stops and activates its stop arm and flashing red lights, all traffic must stop from both directions, regardless of whether it is on a two-lane or four-lane roadway. On a divided highway with a median, traffic approaching the bus from behind must also stop.
Please keep our kids safe.
